Why Adult Hair Products Don't Belong On Your Baby's Scalp
Okay we're not here to shame anyone. We've all been there, it's wash day, your baby's hair is dry, your products are right there on the shelf, and you just need something to work.
But here's what's actually happening when you reach for your adult hair products and apply them to your baby's scalp.
Baby scalps are fundamentally different
A baby's skin, including their scalp, is significantly more permeable than adult skin. That means whatever you put on it gets absorbed much more easily and much more deeply. Ingredients that are perfectly fine for your adult scalp can be overwhelming, irritating, or even harmful for a baby.
Their skin barrier is still developing. Their sebaceous glands are still regulating. Their scalp pH is different from yours. Everything about their hair and scalp is more delicate and more sensitive than you might realize.
The fragrance problem
Most adult hair products contain fragrance, and as we talked about before, fragrance is a catch-all term for hundreds of undisclosed chemicals. For a baby's sensitive and permeable skin, fragrance is one of the most common triggers for irritation, rashes, and eczema flare-ups.
Your hair smells amazing. Your baby's scalp does not need to match. 😭
The concentration problem
Adult products are formulated for adult hair, which means the concentrations of conditioning agents, proteins, and other active ingredients are calibrated for thicker, more resilient strands. Applying those concentrations to fine baby hair can cause buildup, weigh curls down, and clog follicles.
The pH problem
Baby scalp pH sits around 5.5, slightly more acidic than adult scalp pH. Most adult products aren't formulated with that in mind. Using them regularly can disrupt your baby's scalp balance and cause dryness, irritation, and even affect healthy hair growth over time.
What your baby actually needs
Something formulated specifically for them. Clean, plant-based ingredients in concentrations appropriate for delicate scalps. No fragrance, no sulfates, no parabens. A formula that respects the fact that your baby is brand new and their scalp needs gentle, intentional care.
That's exactly why Ooume exists. Because when we couldn't find anything clean enough and specific enough for our babies' curls, we made it ourselves.
