What's Really In Your Baby's Hair Products, And What To Avoid

What's Really In Your Baby's Hair Products, And What To Avoid

If you've ever flipped over a bottle of baby shampoo and felt immediately lost, same. The ingredient lists are long, the names are confusing, and somehow everything is marketed as "gentle" and "natural" even when it really isn't.

Here's what to actually look for.

Sulfates — the big one

Sulfates are what make shampoo lather. They're also what strips your baby's scalp of its natural oils, leaving hair dry, brittle, and irritated. You'll see them listed as Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). If it's on the label, put it back.

Parabens

Parabens are preservatives used to extend shelf life. They're also hormone disruptors — meaning they can interfere with your baby's endocrine system. Look for methylparaben, propylparaben, or butylparaben and avoid them completely.

Fragrance

This one sneaks up on people because it seems harmless. But "fragrance" on a label is actually a catch-all term that can hide hundreds of undisclosed chemicals — many of which are known irritants and allergens. For babies with sensitive skin or eczema, fragrance is often the culprit.

Phthalates

Usually hiding inside that "fragrance" listing. Phthalates are linked to hormone disruption and are especially concerning for babies and young children.

Mineral Oil and Petroleum

These coat the hair shaft without actually moisturizing it. They create the illusion of softness while blocking moisture from getting in. Not what you want for curls that need real hydration.

So what should you look for instead?

Plant-based ingredients you can actually recognize. Things like baobab protein, watermelon seed oil, aloe, glycerin, and avocado oil, ingredients that actually nourish without any of the harmful stuff.

At Ooume, every ingredient in our formula is plant-based, fragrance-free, and chosen with your baby's scalp in mind. No sulfates, no parabens, no toxic ingredients. Ever.

Because your baby deserves a clean routine from day one.
